We're going to pass

Another day of nice sunny mornings, with rain expected in the afternoon. I was telling a friend that this time seems harder with the neighbors son/family visiting as we have no end date that we can at least tell ourselves well, they will be gone on such and such date. I always find it so odd that their place to hang out is right out in front of the garage. Like here is this 5200 sf house, on 4 acres. The complete back of the house, with huge backyard and river view, has a huge nice patio at ground level and at the upper level, both all across the whole backside of the house. You'd think that would be the nicest place to spend time, LOL.

The other neighbor has not been back since his little bit of work he did last Wednesday. So odd. And while we have had rain, most of the days the morning and early afternoon are nice and sunny and then the afternoon/eve it rains. Saturday was no rain.

We finally got the bid from the fence guy on the extra gates at our piers and extending the fence. Ridiculous amount of $3400. He's charging half of what we paid to have the whole fence, a small gate and a big double metal gate at our shop entrance driveway. This bid is for 2 small gates and adding 60' of fence. We also still have not heard back from the asphalt sealing guy. Granted weather is playing a huge role in this job, but he could at least return dh's call. Contractors just make me want to throw up, at this point. Dh said no way on what that fence guy wants to charge. He said no one is worth $2500 for one days worth of labor for 2 guys. I don't make enough to cover wages like that to someone else!

Last night I remembered the final episodes of Manifest are on Netflix now, so I started watching that. Because I've got to know the why behind it all. It's been a mystery for several years now, haha. I'm finishing up one show on Apple tv and then I'll cancel that until some new seasons of all the shows I just watched come back on, which likely won't be for a year. By the time Severance comes back on, expected early 2024, that will have been almost 2 years wait. That's annoying.

  1. We had to replace maybe 75 feet of chain link fence. That didn’t l include any gates. We received over $8000 from the guy’s insurance, of which around $7000 was for the fencing (had other damage). Since no one would show up to bid the job Dh did it himself. The fencing and a few other supplies came to around $2000, so $5000 +/- for labor. I think the insurance paid to remove the concrete strip going around the bottom, and we just reused it, but that’s still a lot of labor. We were also able to reuse a few poles, so he just spray painted those to match the new black fence.

    1. Good for your dh to be able to do it himself. DH just can't dig the holes anymore :(

    2. So maybe the answer is to have someone come over with a post hole digger to get that done and then do the rest himself?

  2. There is an old saying in Turkish which translates as "do not purchase a home, purchase a neighbor". How do you do that, I don't know. I wish you all the patience while the neighbor's son and family are visiting. If Manifest is getting a proper ending, I would like to watch that show. Please let us know if the ending makes sense.

    1. That is a wise saying! We really tried to do that - Mr and Mrs by themselves are great neighbors...we just didn't know about their son.....

  3. The neighbors probably can go in and out of the house with four kids and not destroy the rest of the house. Kids are messy. Maybe the patio entrance comes into the house in an area where the kids would be in a "good" part of the house.
Those prices are really high. Hopefully, you get it done cheaper.

    1. From comments both Mr and Mrs have made over the years after their visits those kids always manage to break something, inside or out, LOL.

  4. My take away is that even 4 acres isn't land enough to protect you from shitty neighbors(or rather their offspring, etc.)

    1. It seems they are either in front of the garage (which is a side facing garage that faces our house/property) or riding or walking in front of our house

  5. That is a shame about the fence and the costs. My mom did a few panels of wooden fence and one fence post, I believe it was 700 to 900 Canadian. The costs of the materials and labour has gone up. I think the fact that you can't even get the quotes on time says a whole lot too, though.

    1. All the contractors here are like that, even the ones that seem good

  6. I would say, just keep trying on the fence. A few years ago, we wanted to renovate our master bathroom and the first quote we received was something like $15,000 PLUS materials. We passed on that. We saw a friend post pictures on Facebook of her renovated bathroom, asked for a referral and he gave a quote of $3,700 plus materials. All in we were around half of the original quote for just labor. It definitely pays to wait for the right person / right time.
