The in-laws

I had this long post about them, that just kept getting longer and longer. No one wants to read all that detail, LOL.

Here's the main scoop. FIL's heart surgery to place the stent did not work and he appears to now have additional problems because of their attempt at the surgery. Now he has a blockage in his leg on the side they went in through his groin and messed up the stent he did have there (at least that is how I am understanding this from SIL texts). He is still in ICU, condition seems to go up and down. He's got some pain in his leg and numbness in leg and foot now.

When he is able to be let out of ICU, they want him to go into a rehab facility. SIL says to them "but, there's no one at home to take care of my mom". Not their issue and he certainly wouldn't be well enough at this point to care for her anyway. I don't think SIL thought that through all the way.

For now (since Friday) SIL has been staying at her parents and taking care of her mom (and they've been trying to visit FIL, but he's an hour or more away, with traffic). Of course all this stress is making her dementia off the charts and making her extremely hard to deal with. (yelling, hitting, etc). If FIL has to be in rehab, even for a little while, MIL really needs to be in a nursing home. But, that of  course opens up a whole new can of worms. FIL's rehab facility would be covered by medicaid/insurance. MIL's would not - so even a month or two would eat up their savings. It was discussed among the siblings, again, about getting that awful house sold. But, if FIL does get to come home at some point, then where to? I know SIL just wants MIL in a nursing home. She can't deal with her, plus she has a full time job she needs to be at.

And she seems to be stressing over "how" to sell the crappy house. Spend the money first to fix it up, so they could get out of it what it should be worth? Just sell as is? BIL suggested listing as is, but with allowances for what needs to be replaced/repaired. That seems to be a popular way to sell nowadays, so the buyers have cash to do the fixes. I know FIL has a part in why she's stressing. Because he sees his house as "all good" and should be worth what the house in good condition is worth. Well, it's NOT worth that, at all. It's worth what it's worth and that is how much you have as an asset for it...not what is SHOULD be worth. Putting the money and time it would take to have it fixed up, probably isn't going to gain them much in the end, anyway. Why go through the hassle.

Then evening before last while SIL was trying to care for MIL, MIL wouldn't wait for her and tried to get out of her wheelchair and fell and hit her head. SIL took her to ER, where they did a scan and everything was ok, but then it was discovered she has a UTI, so they decided to keep her in overnight. She's not cooperating at all. Won't eat or take her meds. Getting violent, hitting nurses and doctors. I guess she got so bad last evening, they called SIL to ask if they could put her in restraints. SIL said just wait, I'm on my way over (she only lives a few miles from the hospital). DH talked to MIL on the phone while SIL was on the way over there, then she was calm as can be, LOL. She stayed calmed down after SIL got there (and brought her her favorite coffee) and got her to eat some dinner. Then she finally fell asleep. Only to be woken up so they could draw blood. Which they were trying to find veins. SIL is like "why aren't you using the port that has already been set up to draw blood? You won't get into her veins, they are collapsed". Then she suddenly realized they have not had her on her oxygen! She has one and a half lungs, she is always on oxygen. Good grief. And SIL told them not to wake her up during the night.

In the meantime, FIL is fighting having to go to a rehab facility, mainly because he thinks he needs to be home taking care of MIL. SIL certainly can't take care of both of them! I seem to recall something about when my grandma was in the hospital - I'm sure I have this remembered wrong, but it was something about if she was in the hospital 3 days, and then transferred to rehab/nursing facility it would be covered for awhile? I know there are social workers also helping SIL navigate through this and if it worked out, the social worker at FIL's hospital and the social worker at MIL's hospital are trying to coordinate getting them sent to the same place.

I was just thinking a couple weeks ago, boy - we've been lucky these past months this year. Neither MIL or FIL has had any major health issues where they needed to be hospitalized. It seemed like for a couple of years MIL was having something happen every few months or so.

And this still ended up long!

Catching up: Last day and heading home (Sunday)

In talking with DH, the roofer never showed up, as he then said he would on  Saturday. It had rained a whole bunch of Friday night. But Saturday was nice and sunny and would have been a great day to at least get the paper on, so the rain can't get inside the house.

Got a message from SIL that her daughter had her baby overnight. A perfect little girl. I guess she got MIL's neighbor to come and stay at the house with MIL, so she could be there for the birth. With FIL in the hospital (different one than birth) someone has to be with MIL. I don't know why DH's brother and his wife, who were staying nearby, couldn't have done it.

In messaging with SIL, I asked her how her dad was doing. I guess he took a down turn on Saturday afternoon. Got dehydrated and such. And MIL, with her dementia, was a handful. She's obviously over tired and stressed, so it's much worse. SIL said she thought security was going to call the cops on SIL because MIL was screaming and throwing a fit that she was being kept from her husband or something. I'm not sure what night it was, must have been Friday night or Saturday morning, but SIL said she cautioned her mom about her oxygen cord or something and her mom threw a fit, called her names and slapped her. I guess at about that point she was texting my DH, saying she can't do this anymore!

With my flight out in the afternoon on Sunday, we really didn't have time to drive to the hospital again.  DD and I went out and did some shopping near her house Sunday morning. Went to Ross and she found a couple new tops and two new cardigans to wear to her new job. She also found a cute wall clock that was only $15, for her family room. Then we went to Kohl's. In the back of my mind, I thought, if DD finds something there (and it's in my budget) I'll just get whatever it is, as an early birthday gift to her (birthday in a couple of weeks), so then I won't have to go shopping and ship something over to her. We were walking by some essential oils with lighted warmers and she mentioned she's been wanting to get one of those, so I bought it for her birthday. She reminded me to look for a Kohl's coupon before we paid! So, we got $10 off and 20% off and birthday present given.

I had tried to check in my flight and print my boarding pass the night before. It looked nothing like the boarding pass I printed to fly over. Weird. Since I had to access my flight from my phone (where I had done it from my home desktop for first flight) it then had an option to save to phone wallet, but it wouldn't save. Plus there was this "TSA precheck" printed on the boarding pass. I'm like what does that mean. DD didn't know either, since I don't have TSA precheck status (not going to pay $85 when I only fly once a year or less). I then downloaded the airline app and got my boarding pass again and this time was able to save it to my phone wallet. I googled what the TSA precheck meant and I had received a complimentary pass. Nice! Especially since I was flying back from a very busy airport.

Since you never know how bad traffic is going to be, we gave ourselves enough time so that I would get there at least an hour before boarding started. We actually got there an additional 15 minutes early. The TSA precheck line was awesome. No wait at all. Just scanned my boarding pass and showed my ID. Went to a special lane and set my purse and travel bag on the rollers and walked through the old type of scanners. No shoes required to be removed. It was quick and easy.

My flight actually left about 10 minutes early, we caught a tailwind and the whole flight was only an hour. My airport here is small and super easy to navigate and within minutes I was outside where DH was waiting at the curb. We were almost home by the time my flight was originally supposed to land.

The roofer had finally showed up Sunday afternoon (good grief).  It was raining. They were soaked. One of the guys he had with him was wearing a sweatshirt and sweatpants. Roofer asked if we had a heater in the shop and DH said yes...then he said well, worker can just go in by the heater and dry off. DH said, no, that's not happening. That is our living quarters/bedroom area. Then he wanted DH to pay for a motel room! (because they were coming back Monday morning) DH said no.

The ground around our house and shop was practically flooded, it rained almost 2 inches. For awhile there was a huge deep puddle all around our door into the shop. The ground actually sunk out in front of the door about 6 inches, so DH will have to add more fill.

Catching up: Dress shopping day

Saturday was our day to go wedding dress shopping. We were driving all the way down to where my mom and DD's future MIL lives. Almost an hour and a half drive. Since hearing about FIL, we decided we'd better stop by the hospital he was at (about halfway between DD's and where we were heading) and see him.  We got there around 9:15am. DH's brother and his wife (that live near us) had driven over the night before and had just arrived, too. When we were there FIL was doing really well.  Very talkative and sitting up. We stayed about half hour or so.

Then we left and went to my mom's. Visited with her and had lunch at her house. We were going to the mall to David's Bridal, but had to go pick up future MIL, which was opposite direction about 15-20 minutes. We gave ourselves an hour to get to the mall from her house- which should have taken about 25 minutes.  Took us an hour and 15 minutes! God, I do not miss that awful traffic over there. An hour and 15 minutes to go 20 miles. We were about 15 minutes late for our appointment, but I had called and let them know we were close. We were literally about 1/2 mile away when I called and still took 15 minutes by the time we got there and found parking.

She had picked out a couple of dresses from their website she wanted to try on, and the lady helping also brought several others in similar style. She tried 6 or so on in total and of course ended up picking out the first one she tried on, LOL. Of course she looked beautiful in all of them. Of course myself and future MIL cried when she said "this is the one". My mom is getting older, I can sure tell. In her younger years she would have been all into it. Her forgetfulness and age is starting to make a change in her, I can tell. After the dress shopping we had to drop her back off at her house. So, I didn't really get a long visit with my mom this time, as I would have liked. Our original plan had been to leave my office Thursday afternoon, go spend the night at my mom's and do the dress shopping Friday, but that was before DD got her job offer and orientation date, so we switched dress day to Saturday.

Then we went to future in-laws house. Fiance had driven his truck down and spent the day with his dad, helping him with stuff. His dad has to have hip surgery this week, so isn't moving around too good, because of his pain. We all decided to go out to dinner, for Mexican food.  Future FIL is so much like fiance, LOL. After dinner DD and I drove the hour or so back up to their house - in the dark, in pouring rain. We were both tired by the time we got home.

DD was happy to have found a dress she loved and I'm so glad I got to join in to see her pick it out. I paid for her dress, which was $450, so not too pricey. I had almost $400 from my side job bonus and M-Turk earnings, so contributed another $100 (with sales tax)........when I opened the mail this morning there was a surprise $100 check from our construction loan bank. Something about a refund on our inspection fee.

The lovely dress:

Catching up: Day Two

Friday DD had to go to her new job orientation really early in the morning. Plus she had to drive about 50 miles to get there. Her actual office she will work out of is 20 miles from their house, next door to the building her fiance works in. But this company is huge and spread out all over the area, so the orientation was farther away. She was out the door before 5am and her fiance was about 5:30. I slept in until about 8 (which was really 9 my time), which was nice. Since I last stayed there, she had put a mattress topper on the guest bed, which made it much more comfortable.

I was expecting to have most of the day to myself, as she did not know how long her orientation would be. (I had no car to drive).  When I went to bed I was going to charge my phone, but there were no outlets available (behind dresser and bed), so in the morning I'm trying to plug my phone in downstairs and it wasn't charging. Realized the cat chewed through my phone cord! I had some coffee and pound cake for breakfast. Got showered and dressed. Played with their dog. Watched a bit of tv and then DD texted that she was done with her orientation already at 10:30 and on her way home. That was nice that we ended up with most of Friday to spend together, then. For lunch I had my leftovers I brought home from lunch with boss. After she got home we went straight to Target and got me a new phone charging cord. I was down to about 7% battery life left. Silly cat.

Got a text Friday afternoon that FIL's heart stent surgery did not go well. His artery perforated in two places and then complications ensued. Blood pressure, etc. They had to put him in ICU to stabilize him. So, he didn't get the stent put in. Poor SIL, she's trying to deal with that (and MIL) as well as her daughter was 2 days overdue to have her baby.  (more on all that in next post)

When DD's fiance got home from work Friday, we chilled for awhile, and then went and got teriyaki for dinner (another food I've been missing). Came back and visited and watched a movie.  They have Youtube tv and were kind enough to add me onto it, so now I can watch some more tv from here at home.

DH kept busy, installing some window trim inside our shop windows. He sent me some pics and it turned out really nice. Roofer still had not shown up yet (was supposed to come Wednesday), so he was still pretty unhappy about that. No one worked on the house on Friday, at all.

It was nice to have a day of relaxing, after the day of traveling.

Up next: the dress :)

Catching up: the office

I'm back. Had a great few days away from home.  I flew out late Thursday morning and arrived just before noon. Since it's a fairly short flight, the plane is a smaller turboprop plane. We have to actually walk out of the tarmac to board, haha. I had a smaller overnight bag, so I was able to take it with me inside the plane, rather than dropping it off onto the cart, where they put them all under the plane. Saved me a few minutes getting off the plane, as I didn't have to stand there (in the pouring rain) and wait for the cart to be brought over.

DD was waiting to pick me up and we took the short drive (like 10 minutes) to my new office. What a great new office space they created. My boss gave us the tour around it all. Said hi to lots of people and lots of hugs. Then we went out to lunch. The funny was the day before when my boss emailed about taking us out to lunch, I was about to email back "let's go to the bakery place" (that's my favorite) and then realized "oh, that's at the old office" LOL. Then when DD and I were driving to the office, she also said "too bad we can't go to the bakery for lunch, it was my favorite". Then my boss says "do you guys want to go to the bakery for lunch?" They have one of them nearby their new office! Got to have my favorite "pasta penne with roasted chicken".  We went back to the office and then my boss took me around to introduce me to all the new people I did not know. So many new faces. I said I felt like I was the new employee, haha. It was so great to meet them all and especially a couple of them, who I email with on a daily basis. I got hugs from them, too.

The office is so nice. Everyone's desk raises up, if they'd like to stand. No one has telephones. All new system with bluetooth or to cell phones. Lots of Pottery Barn furnishings. A coffee bar, with espresso machine. A weight room. A pool table room. A couple of bikes to ride the bike trail during lunch. Lots of good parking. Apparently the old office, now with a majority of the parking not being used (it hasn't been leased out yet) has become even more of a homeless campground. More rv's parking and now tents in the parking lot. Just crazy. There are still several smaller businesses inside this building and they have to put up with that?! Everyone is so glad to be out of that area.

We left about 2:45 to head up to DD's house, about 55 miles away. Expecting a 2-3 hour rush afternoon drive, but it wasn't bad at all.  Took us a little over an hour. Her fiance got home not too long after we did.  Had another food I've been craving, for dinner. Papa John's pizza :) Visited and watched some tv. Got to see this season's episodes of Big Bang Theory and then we watched the newest episode that evening.

More to follow.

Getting ready

Well, the house roof system/trusses and sheeting are all completed. Ready for the roofer to come. He is supposed to come today to get started. It sounds like he will be laying the paper next couple of days. Then he has to go do another job already scheduled, and then will be back to start putting on shingles. Hopefully he actually shows up today (you NEVER know with these subs) because rain is supposed to be back on Friday. After today, it sounds like the framing crew will be down to 2 guys. They still have fascia to put up, one end gable to sheet, a stairway to build inside and both front and back patio covers. So, still lots for them to do.

I just realized my car tabs are due! I didn't even get a notice in the mail. I think I did last year, to renew them. I think I am missing mail since we moved. I hardly get anything in the mail, not even  very much junk mail. I've changed my address with probably 99% of who I could think of. But not stuff like our car registrations and voting...figured the ballots would get forwarded, but haven't received those yet either. I just figured out how to pay my car tabs online.

So, I started writing this and then got busy with other stuff.  It's almost noon and no roofer. HA! big surprise. Let the fun of subcontractors begin.  But, on a good note, windows are just now being delivered.

Tomorrow I board a plane and take my little trip. I just printed my boarding pass. I remember last time I flew I printed it from home, but when I tried to check in, I had to go over to a kiosk and reprint it, because apparently I didn't capture all of it on the paper. This time I printed it landscape, so I am hoping I am good to go this time.  Not that this little airport is busy at all, but it would be nice to do it all right this time, LOL.  DD is picking me up at the airport and we then only have to drive 6 miles to my new office.  My boss is going to take us out to lunch, so that will be nice. It will also be nice to just be able to get off the plane and walk out to be picked up, rather than having to take a shuttle over to a car rental place and do all that. I'm just taking a carry on bag, so no waiting on that.  It's kind of funny with this smaller plane. You have a carry on bag, but then as you are walking (outside!) to get on the plane you drop your bag on a cart, that ends up going underneath, anyway, LOL. Then, when  you get off the plane, the cart is waiting and you grab your bag.  The bag I'm taking should be easy to spot. It's kind of a blue paisley print overnight bag.

So, you probably won't see another post from me until next Monday

A visitor

We just had a surprise visit by our banker lady, to come and and see the project. She said she likes to take time out to try and do that with all the construction loans she does. She was pretty much just in awe of it all: the property, the scenery, the house. She especially loves the rockery work. A couple of times she said "it's all just perfect". She also said this is the nicest one she's seen.  Plus she knows our builder and his sons (who work for him) pretty well. They all live in the same community and he built her house, too. I was telling her about my "4 seasons" drone photos of the river I have now and she wants to see them, so I will email them to her. I said I'm thinking of having them printed and framed and hang somewhere in the new house.

I remembered I still have $5.71 in Walmart savings catcher $ to use up. I haven't ordered from Walmart online for quite awhile.  Been using Target or Amazon. I see you still have to really watch the Walmart prices and I really don't like how they also have so many other sellers listed now. I'm not looking to buy from other (usually much higher priced) sellers. I'm looking to buy from Walmart. Makes shopping online there a bit frustrating. But, I ordered a few things, to get to $35 free shipping and got my $5.71 credit used.  I've had Walmart ads show up in my Facebook feed that has something that looks interesting (decor or something) and I'll click on it and it's not really even being sold by Walmart - it's through a 3rd party seller and the dresser will end up being like $500 or something. That's not Walmart priced! LOL.

My neck is feeling better and better the past two days. I spent a lot of time stretching it the last few days. Today is more of a base of the neck dull headache, but that's much better than feeling like a pinched nerve.

Our old dog is driving me nuts,  haha. It's too cold outside for him, so he keeps wanting back inside the shop. But as soon as I let him in, 2 minutes later he wants back out. It's still cold out, buddy! He needs a sweater.

The start of a short work week

We just received a quote from another electrician. MUCH better than the quote from the guy we had finish out the shop (after our electrician died). That electrician wanted $27,000 to do  our house!! DH basically told him he's dreaming and there is no way we can cover that kind of overage out of pocket. Our contractor had $18,000 in our bid for electrical, plus $2000 for fixtures.....but apparently he's been having issues with the guy he normally uses, so encouraged us to get other bids.  This guy who just submitted a quote today was $18,800, but that did include some can lighting fixtures. We are much relieved to get a quote in line with what we need it to be. We are still waiting for a quote from the other guy, who came out last Wednesday. I have a feeling he is going to be in the ballpark, too. Hopefully he'll get us the quote in the next day or two, so we can make a decision. We may end up with electricity and lights, after all now, LOL.

My friend, who's DH was cheating on her and left her, is sure being put through the ringer by him. I feel so bad for her.  A month or two ago, I had said to her, I'll bet if you stop contacting him and stop telling him how much you want to work it out, he'll come back around. Sure enough. About two weeks ago he moved out of his gf's and moved into his mom's. (this guy is 58 years old). Started texting and calling my friend, of course, now wanting to try to work it out. Said he was missing her. Said he couldn't handle the gf's 3 young kids (duh). So, they've been trying to talk through it, etc.  She even went with him to his high school reunion or some function this past weekend. Then last night he tells her he wants a divorce and misses his gf. Good grief!  She's got way more patience than I would have with this crap.

Oh great. DH just said the framing guys brought back some pizza for lunch and were sharing with our two dogs, who were being piggy about it, of course. How much do you want to bet I'll be wiping up dog puke at 3am?! GRRRR.  Our dogs don't do well eating people food.

DD just called me. She's free from her old job. All done. haha.  Her supervisor had left her a nice card and note. She only worked half day Friday and he isn't in the office today, so she didn't really get to say goodbye to him. She really did like him (just not the department manager, over him). Now she gets a few days to relax and hang out at home a bit before jumping into her new job.

I'm reading another good book. The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.  Very interesting writing style.

Sunday

So far, all day today, my neck is bad again. Just feels like it needs to pop so bad. DH got a really really terrible leg cramp last night, after all his working outside yesterday. Says it feels like it's just going to break his leg. Of course, he didn't eat any bananas the past week and a half! Usually he has one every day. I have also read that pickle juice is good for cramps. I ran into town. Stopped at the store and got some bananas and pickles, for the juice. Worth a shot.  He's been working outside all day setting some rocks by hand, so I'm sure he's going to pay for it tonight.

oh! my neck just popped a bit! But not enough that it will help, I doubt.

Lots of orange in town today, LOL.  Hunters stopping at the store. I noticed the little deli section had some premade "hunter's lunch specials" for sale. Two sandwiches, a bag of chips and an orange.

We did some measuring, still trying to figure out how we want our front walkway area done, between the driveway, front entrance covered part, and the pad in front of garage doors. Trying to tie it all together with walkway.

It's 4pm already. I really wanted a nap today, but for some reason that didn't work out.

I don't even know yet what I am making for dinner tonight. My choices are pretty limited, LOL. It's probably going to have to be clam chowder soup or pot roast soup. I'm trying to leave some things DH can/will eat the 4 nights I am gone at the end of next week. He can do soup, chili, sandwiches and cereal, haha. He could probably heat up a pot pie in the microwave, but that's probably too hard for him, LOL.

Won $4 from the Megamillions lottery ticket. Woohoo! Used those winnings to buy 2 more tickets, since nobody won.

DH talked to another mason about finishing our shop and doing the house stonework. I kind of figured this guy wouldn't work. He's the son in law of someone we know. First off, they live like 3 hours away, in another city, and second off, everything I've seen of his work on Facebook looks like huge real rock fireplaces and stuff. (not even my style). For some reason one of his reasons for not doing it was because of our stones needing mortar between (we aren't doing drystack). Huh?! Isn't that what a mason does? puts mortar between stones? Whatever LOL.  Supposedly we are still on tap for a local guy to do it for us, once he's done with the jobs he's already committed to. DH only talked to this guy as kind of a favor to our friend, since it was his son in law.

Ow, my neck!

I've had a pinched nerve or something in my neck the past 3 days. Good headache to go along with it and can't seem to get it back to normal. Been applying heat and stretching, but no luck. I'm hoping that a couple of days of not sitting at my desk all day (since it's the weekend) will help.

DH has been adding wheel barrows of the gravel mixture to the front entrance pad, where they were short about a foot or so around it, getting ready for concrete.  He also ended up having to dig up his conduit pipes next to the front entrance and adding some pipe to them to set them farther out. He's been busy today. It's nice and sunny out, in the high 60's. I guess DH decided he doesn't want an elk/mountains stamped in the concrete on the front walkway. We're just going to do it like our back patio is - wood stamped with slate stamping on the border.

We have the roofer lined up to come Wednesday and get started. Same guy who did our shop. There was some question on whether he would do it for the price our contractor had in our cost breakdown, but he said he will do it for that price.  The rain is supposed to hold off until next Friday, so hopefully the roofer will at least have it all dried in, like he said he could/would.

I just placed a Target order. Getting low on laundry detergent. Usually we buy in the store, but I decided to just order online this time. They are having a gift card deal where buy 3 cleaning items and get $10 Target giftcard. I bought 2 detergents and one swiffer duster refill. Once I get the $10 giftcard in my email, I'll use that towards the dog brushing chews I need to order.

It's hunting season starting today. Hearing gun shots in the area off and on. I guess the 2 days prior were open hunting only for youths and the son of our neighbors about 1 mile down the road got a buck yesterday morning, across the road.  DH isn't a hunter. He thought he might want to give it a try once we moved here, but decided he just can't shoot an animal. Not that he has anything against hunting, just not his thing.

My niece is due to have her baby girl any day now. Her first and my SIL's first grandchild. I need to get a baby gift sent soon. Maybe I'll see if she was registered anywhere for baby showers and have something just sent directly to her. Oh, well, I see she is registered with Target, so I will take a look through her list :) Baby stuff is so cute.

DD and her DF went camping again this weekend with their new camper trailer. They went with DF's old boss and his wife and a few other couples. DD drove the truck and pulled the trailer AND parked it!  Ya, she's a bad$%$. haha.  I love her confidence.

Took the plunge

Well, I finally did it.  Got DH on a non-Obamacare plan. It's a 4 month short term plan, that can be renewed. It starts effective 11/1.  While the tax penalty is still in effect for 2018, it is not penalized if you had coverage for at least 10 months, so that is why I waited to start 11/1. I've been paying $560 a month for a bronze piece of crap plan. The 2019 rates are not out yet, but according to an article I read, this company had requested a 10% premium increase for 2019, so I'd most likely be looking at around $615/mo for next year.  Just cannot do it anymore.  The new plan is $181/mo. Compared to what I'd most likely have been paying in 2019, that's over $5000 savings for the year. If nothing else, I could stick that $5000 in a savings every year, just for health expenses. Maybe once the house is done and our monthly expenses are back to normal (and I know exactly what they are), I can start doing that, or at least put some of it in savings account for that.

That has been the one thing I am so disappointed with since Trump got elected and the republicans have both house and senate. They didn't do what they promised, to do away with Obamacare and costs just keep skyrocketing. But, at least the door got opened a crack, for these short term plans to start getting offered and the tax penalty done away with. I'm betting that with the tax penalty going away a lot more people are going to start opting for these cheaper plans.

Speaking of health insurance.....here is something I just do not get. A friend on Facebook recently shared a link to a go fund me page for a woman in her community. I can't remember now what was wrong with her medically, but the gist of why she needs money is she is a hardworking, single mother of 6, who doesn't have health insurance. How in the world doesn't she have health insurance?! Wasn't that the whole point of Obamacare - so those who couldn't afford it would be able to get free (or very subsidized) healthcare? Unless she makes a ton of money (I didn't get that impression) I would think that someone with 6 dependents would qualify for free healthcare? Why does she not have it? I'm required by law to have it (AND PAY FOR IT through the nose!!), but someone who can get it for free doesn't have it? Just stupid.

Small town life: I needed to update our mailing address for our property taxes and also our car vehicle registrations/titles. I just emailed our county records clerk to ask how I do it. She said she'll take care of it, no trip in to the county office needed. She's also the wife of the guy that did most of our excavating work, haha.

So, the roofer who did our shop roof stopped by yesterday. He's the guy our contractor uses most often, but he also said he has gone into "gouge mode" just like all the subs, so he's been having to find other roofers to stay in budget on his jobs. The guy now wants $300 "a sheet".  Our contractor says that's ridiculous. A roofer can do 3 sheets an hour.....so he's making $600 an hour!! WTH?!! Then framer and contractor say "well, it costs whatever it costs". DH was like No! it's going to cost what you put in for the cost when you gave us (and the bank) the cost breakdown for this job!

The contractors HVAC guy was supposed to come yesterday to make sure the contractor's number is right (it's not, we already know that) and so we can compare with another bid we got ourselves from a different HVAC company. He never showed up, of course.

Hey! I finally found DH's missing password list. When we were packing to move (now I remember) he handed me a bunch of slips of paper with names and phone numbers and business cards, as well as his password list all folded up and told me to hold on to them. I put it all in a big envelope and forgot that I had it or what was in it. Came across it yesterday, as I was looking for something else.

Thursday this and that

Bits of this and that:

3 close by gun shots at 4am this morning. Who would be shooting in the dark at 4am? LOL. DH said it sounded like a "22" so they couldn't be shooting at anything too big.

Now a good friend's FIL just passed away. Another nice man I knew. He ran a auto repair shop and the only guy we trusted to take our cars to, when we needed repairs.

The excavating guy we use said if he ever builds a house he's going to steal our plans ;) He came yesterday afternoon to prep for our front porch concrete and also prepped the pad in front of the big tall shop door.

This morning the head framer says the excavating guy didn't do the front porch pad big enough, it was supposed to be 2 feet outside of the posts. Well....maybe if you would have been here working yesterday you could have seen that while he was doing it..........

It's 28 degrees outside this morning, but supposed to get to 65 degrees today. Wooo!

Our fence guy recommended an electrician to get a bid from. He came out yesterday. We both really liked him a lot. We are so hoping his pricing his more reasonable. Even his business card says "Our prices won't shock you!"  haha.  He also had some good suggestions.

DH has twice now said "I really like the guy who is building down on the last lot". I still have not met him yet! I've talked to his wife several times, but it's always during the day and he's at work. He was pulling in our street, home from work, when DH and the excavator were out there talking, so he stopped to say hi to them. They are finishing the inside of their home themselves. Ahh to be young again.

My foot just fell asleep for no reason

Yesterday, our black dog (aka the chipmunk hunter) was obsessed with our neighbors little pickup truck they have parked on the edge of their driveway. Figured it must have some critter hiding in the engine compartment. Gave him a call with a heads up. LOL  He said he's had to set traps before (usually a pack rat).

Our yellow lab mix dog needs a winter coat! He wants to be outside all morning with DH and the work crew, but he gets cold, so he's back at the door to come in. Then 5 minutes later he forgets how cold it was outside and wants back in.

Another friend lost

It seems like there has been so much death in relatives, friends and acquaintances this year. Yesterday we found out a friend we had, when our son raced, passed away after a long battle with cancer. DH knew him better than I did. When at the races I wasn't usually in the mix of talking race cars with the guys, haha. But, I remember him as a very nice guy and our sons were good friends and the same age (when most of the racers were older adults guys). They stopped racing about a year after we did. I'm not sure why, but assumed it was for the same reason we did....just too expensive. We've all kept in touch via Facebook, over the last 6 years or so.

I was trying to figure out why the news of his death hit me so hard yesterday. And then DD kind of said the same thing. She said she just felt so sad over it. It's not like we were super close family friends. Just for a few years, basically. We didn't socialize outside of racing. DH sent his son a message saying how sorry he was to hear about his dad. His son actually sent back words of comfort. He said "my dad really liked you and 2010 was the best times we ever had and you and your family were a big part of it".

Then I realized why this man's death has affected me so much. We did a racing tour that summer of 2010. While hard, it was so much fun at the same time. I think that's probably what I also link this nice man to, the memory of that time together, as families and friends. A time when our son was still with us. He had just graduated high school and the future seemed so promising. Honestly, I would have thought this other kid would have been the one to turn out like our son has. He was such a goofball teenager. Didn't care much about school, etc. I've been pleased to watch him turn into a very hardworking, responsible young man and father, himself. He learned a very high paying trade and does well.

RIP friend. I'm glad to know he won't be suffering from that horrible disease any longer.

The Wow factor

I took that picture of them setting the beam yesterday, but didn't really go outside the rest of the day. And I couldn't see what the construction guys were doing the rest of the day, as the front of the house was blocking what they were working on. Until late afternoon, DH said come out and look.......

I was a bit in awe, to say the least. I've seen it in drawings and plans and in my head, what it was going to look like, but to see it come to life was pretty amazing. (I was standing in our loft sitting area looking across/down into the great room). I can also tell this loft sitting area is going to be one of my favorite places to cozy up and read a book. We're putting a little fake electric fireplace up there, too. I can just imagine sitting there, looking out the big windows to snow covered trees :)

Today they are working on sheeting that roof area, which I'm sure will change it even more on how it looks/feels. I need to do some research on what kind of electric fireplace insert to get. They seem to be pretty reasonably priced and framer just wants to know if it needs to be vented or not. It's going to be built in a short half wall in the sitting room. It doesn't appear that these types I'm looking at do need venting. Does anyone have an electric fireplace? This one on Amazon has good reviews.

It looks like I will get to see DD again next month. They are planning on coming over mid November weekend with their new camper trailer and spending the weekend.  I just hope by then there are no issues for them to get over the passes to get here and back home. Next week is my trip over to see her, mom, and my boss/office. DD has a Saturday appt. set up to try on wedding dresses at David's Bridal with me, my mom and her future MIL.

Just got news an old friend has lost his long battle with cancer. So sad. Seems like so many have lost their lives so young lately. Our boys were good friends.

Sunny productive Monday, along with some excitement

While it's very cold, at least the sun is out and no rain is expected for at least the next week and a half. The crane guy showed up this morning to set the big beam that runs across the peak of the roof, across the great room. Most of this beam will be visible in the ceiling. And now with that set, they can finish getting the rafters in and sheeting for the roof.

I started the morning off with 5 quick M-Turk surveys and have $6.75 today, so far. One paid $3 and was supposed to take 30 minutes. I timed it and took me 10 minutes.  It was interesting. A new survey showed up, but when I clicked on it I got the message that there were no more of these hits available. I get that quite often, but this time I clicked on the hit (a $2 one) a second time and then I was able to do it. I'll have to try that more often.

OMG - lots of excitement just happened. I heard dogs yipping like crazy. Look out the door and see the framer's tiny dog running off with something huge in it's mouth! It was a packrat. Apparently our black dog has been fixated on a pile of lumber all morning. DH went to see what he was trying to get and the rat ran out of the lumber. The dogs gave chase. Through the house, around the patio, back in the house and it came right through the laundry back into the garage where DH was still standing and went between two pieces of plywood setting up alongside a wall. DH held it between there, where it started to climb up, so he wacked it with a piece of wood, dead. The tiny dog grabbed it (this is when I looked out the window) and took off running as fast as she could. It was almost as big as her LOL! Her human dad got her to bring it to him and in the garbage can it went. We are so getting a cat or two when this house is done, LOL.

Cold, hot or warm

We kind of were slow to get going yesterday. Finally, around 1:30 we got outside and DH started putting in the "blocking" for the recessed lights in the garage. At least for this (compared to the shop) there were only 9 to install (instead of 30) and he only had to stand on a ladder to reach. Much easier, though for some reason he sure seemed to be having trouble even screwing a dang screw into the boards.  Finally got done around 7:30pm (we should have started earlier!). The late dinner was some New England clam chowder soup, crackers, and some jello parfait.

I don't know what he has been puttering around outside this morning doing. It's only 34 degrees out. I see our neighbors have a couple of fires going - burning brush, etc. I just finished cleaning "house". Which consisted of washing the dishes from yesterday, cleaning the bathroom and vacuuming the carpet we have in our sleeping area and a couple of runner rugs in the "kitchen", and dusting what I can. It sure seems to get dusty in here, which I'm sure is from all the construction.

The framers are supposeded to have the house roof done and sheeted by the end of this week. The garage/bonus room is sheeted and so far about 1/4 of the house is. They still have to install a big beam across the great room and then they can finish framing the roof and sheeting it all. With what they have sheeted so far on the roof, it's making the house look a lot more "normal" size, haha. It was looking huge to me up until then.

I finished that good book "The Snow Child". Of course, it's one of those that leaves you wondering what exactly happened, at the end. While it was a very good story, I like to have answers and closure, LOL. Then my next book reserved became available and I quickly read that one in about a day and a half....the latest in the Longmire books. Now I'm starting a science fiction novel called "Station Eleven".

We are trying to figure out our heater, here in the shop. The inside temp of the shop seems to stay during the day around 70 degrees. We have the heater set at 63, but it comes on all the time. By morning it's like a toast 73 degrees inside. I'm guessing it gets warmer during the night because the door isn't being opened a hundred times a day. But, what we don't get, is if we have it set at 63 and it's higher temp than that inside, why is it even coming on? The guy who installed it did mention something about it coming on to circulate air, too, so maybe that's what it's doing, but it sure seems like it's heat. The heater is on the wall on DH's side of the bed. The past few morning he sees our inside temp at 73 (he's too warm) and says "it's 73 degrees in here, did you turn the heater up or something". And each time I say "no....I haven't touched it....."Finally this morning I said, well, then turn it down a few degrees to 60!

We have two temperature sensors inside the shop. One is on the other side as part of the garage door openers. Right now they are saying 67. Then Dh has a "weather station", over next to the heater wall and it is saying 69.  The heater, set at 60, just kicked on for about a minute, blowing, heat. I don't get it. But, I will make sure it's turned down to 60 at night when I go to bed and see if that helps not get it so warm during the night.

TGIF sun

I got my sun yesterday, finally. and it's nice and sunny (but cold) today. Now they are predicting a bit of snow tomorrow morning, but I doubt it will happen. All next week it's supposed to be sunny and get up to mid 60's. Good for construction.

In order for us to watch a bit of tv here and there, I can log into my mom's Xfinity/Comcast account via our computers and devices. I opened the infinity steaming on DH's computer and set it up, logged in, with a short cut to make it easy for him, so he could watch his news shows when he wanted. Well, I had no idea he still uses his old comcast email we had previously (from 2 years ago at old house). He's always used aol email. But, I guess he still occasionally gets emails via there (notified on his phone) and got one last night he wanted to reply to, but on his computer it was now logged in with my mom's info. Of course he doesn't know his password for his comcast email. Of course it's 10pm and I was already asleep. Of course it's my fault he lost his password list/paper. I tried to reset it, but apparently he had his security question answer wrong. Finally he said just figure it out tomorrow - while he sat and complained about it for 10 minutes. I said I didn't realize he even used a comcast email account.

Sometime during the night (when the dog woke me up to go outside again -he's still having some diarrhea for some reason) I then had trouble falling back asleep. A thought occurred to me that shouldn't there be a way to see all the stored passwords in Firefox? You know, how when it asks you if you want to save the log in and passwords? So, I got up this morning and figured out (pretty easy) how to find all those various website passwords. I was pretty much able to re-create his paper list of passwords (cuz he can't just try to use the same password or two for everything) and got him logged back in.

I'm going to try to give our dog some boiled white chicken and rice for the next day or so and see if that helps him. Otherwise he seems fine. Has an appetite and normal energy. And I have some chicken breasts taking up some room in my tiny freezer, that I probably won't make anything with while here in the shop.

Well, the rest of the afternoon I am off work, so I am going to take a nap.  Sleep hasn't been very good the past 2 nights, so I am in need of a good nap right now.

where's my sun I was promised?!

I'm in the middle of a really good book called "The Snow Child" by Eowyn Ivey. So far it's a very intriguing story of a childless couple in the wilds of Alaska who build a snowgirl and she appears to come to life.

Here's a recent pic of the house construction, from the other day, when the ground got tore up again. A lot is getting done, it just seems really slow, for some reason. Probably because on any given day, there are only 2 guys working on it. We had to go into the city yesterday and met with the contractor to go over his draw request and he said they should be ready to start roofing at the end of next week. His son (the head framer) got back yesterday (1/2 day for him) and when we got back and DH told him what his dad said, he just rolled his eyes. Ya, we didn't think he was that close either. Not sure how contractor would even know for sure, he hasn't been out here in weeks. Let alone the head framer has been gone most of the last 2 weeks.

The backhoe had to dig two holes for the front porch posts and also the ditch for a power line to come in to the front door. DH wants to hook up a switch where we can open the front gate from inside our front door.

Not a good night's sleep. Got woke up around 1am as our older dog needed to go outside. Then later we got woken up to hearing him pacing around. Turns out he had diarrhea in several areas on the rugs. Ugh. So, I was up at 4:30 trying to clean those messes up. Crawled back in bed at 5am and then we both overslept until 7:40. Not sure what is wrong with him. Hopefully nothing serious. I gave him about half his breakfast this morning (he went outside with DH for awhile) to see how he does with it. He's just been staying in the shop with me, snoozing. So far so good. I think I'll wait another hour or so and give him the other half of his breakfast.

I continue to plug away at extra earning via M-Turk. I try for $3 a day/approx $100 for a month. Some days I get less, some days I get more.  One of these days I hope to have more time to invest to figure out how to qualify for more of the hits. The only way, on most days (unless I happen to get lucky and find a good paying one), that I can get $3 is to just keep checking back off and on all day. Something new will be added and they usually get snagged up quick. I transferred $65 to my bank account last Friday and right now I have another $20 earned. I put the transferred money into my old checking account (along with the $200 bonus I got, recently) and will use it to put towards DD's wedding dress. We are going looking when I visit her in 2 weeks. Hopefully I can transfer another $50 into there from earnings. Right now I have $341 in the account and am hoping to have $400 by the time I visit her. If she doesn't find a dress then, I'll just keep saving.

It's supposed to be totally sunny today. I see no sun. Just overcast and it's almost noon. I'm ready to see some sun again.

I had to order DH some Casoron weed killer. This is his "go-to" stuff he likes to use and boy is it expensive. He wasn't quite sure how much he'd need. One 50 lb bag for sure, probably two. So I ordered 2 bags....at $203 each! But, I guess in the grand scheme of things spending that once a year is still cheaper than hiring a lawn service company to fertilize and weed (like our neighbors use). And good news, DH was able to get all he wanted covered with one bag this morning, so he is able to save the other bag for next time.

I was texting with my old neighbor friend the other night and she says she uses the Walmart pick up order service. Orders online (even fresh food) and then goes into the city and picks it up. She said it's working great and she hasn't been disappointed yet with the service. Once I have a real kitchen again, I am going to try this out. What a time saver not to have to spend 45 minutes or so walking around the store with a heavy cart trying to stock up. And then having to load it all into my car myself.

Rain rain go away

The rain is back today. But, it's supposed to stop early this afternoon and then the weather report shows sunny dry days for the next 9 days at least. Our head framer is supposed to be back to work tomorrow. Let's hope lots gets done during this dry weather phase, so they can get the roofing started. The building supply guy showed up yesterday to verify all the windows and was getting his order in for them, which he says takes 2 weeks and wants to be on top of it, even if we aren't ready for them yet. He said he'd rather hold on to them, them be late with them (like what happened with our shop windows - contractors fault, not his).

Last night I zapped pot pies in the microwave again.  But, this time I added some instant mashed potatoes to our meal. Must've tasted good as DH had two servings of each.  I had to run into town this morning, so I stopped at the grocery store for milk and eggs and also picked up a couple more cans of the Progresso roast beef soup he liked. I think I'll make mashed potatoes with that tonight and can use some of the soup broth as gravy. We didn't have any mashed potatoes gravy last nigh - just butter and salt and pepper. I should pick up some jars or cans of gravy, too.

I don't get to see my mom this week. The trip she and her BF were going to take was cancelled, as he wasn't feeling well. Oh well, I will get to see her in about 2 1/2 weeks, at least. It would have been about a 12 hour drive for them, which they were planning to do over two days of driving. I know her BF tried for months to get this appointment, so I'm sure he's disappointed. My mom said his two kids were relieved they weren't going. I then asked her why one of them doesn't drive him there, then? She said she kind of wondered same thing, but hasn't asked. Then she said well, I know his daughter wouldn't do it, but his son might...he's about ready to retire soon. Seriously, if my mom needed me to take her somewhere for a week, I'd take the vacation time and do it for her. I'm not really sure what the deal is of why he wants this specific doctor. My mom has mentioned a couple things about it. At first I thought it was no doctors in their area does this procedure, but then she made it sound like it was just that this doctor was way cheaper than in their area. I'm guessing it's some sort of orthopedic stem cell injection therapy.

DD just texted me that her boss's boss (who she doesn't like) just took credit for an idea she had. She said she is so glad to be getting out of this company, LOL.

A excavating guy just showed up to dig the holes for the front covered porch posts and a trench for something or other DH still needs done.

I almost totally forgot about a webinar conference call I was to do this morning for work. Somehow I missed the pop up reminder, but fortunately l0 minutes before I was to call in, I thought to check my reminder calendar. Whew.

Weekend update

The weekend was half good, half "bleh". Friday night and most of Saturday it rained. It's not a fun thing to see all your house sub floor all soaking wet. Supposedly it's "ok" for OSB board to get wet, for awhile anyway, so we're just trying to trust them in that. It stopped raining in the afternoon and was nice and sunny yesterday and it all seemed to dry out well, actually. Except for one piece up in the bonus room above the garage. It kind of looks a  mess and they will have to replace it.  We/they will still have to address the mold that started underneath the house, in the foundation. DH said it's just the floor joists that is wet - the gravel is still very dry and dusty.

DH got up into the shop attic crawl space yesterday to take a look, since the vents just got installed Friday. He said it looks fine, so that was a relief. He also took the temperature up there. According to experts (and Bob Vila website haha!) the attic temp should be at or near the outside temp (and not more than 20 degrees difference). The temp up there was exactly same as outside, which means the vents are working. Our inside the shop temp was 70, so that tells us the insulation is holding the heat well inside the shop itself, just like it's supposed to be doing.

Our head framer is still off - he got married on Saturday. I'm not sure how many more days he's off (they didn't go on honeymoon) but the other two are here working. We got to see some pictures of his wedding. Looks like a sweet country outdoor wedding. Adorable cute bride.  They had asked DH if he would come with his drone and take some video and pics during the wedding. But, in the end DH didn't. First off it was mostly raining Saturday (though looks like they got a break for the ceremony) and second off DH reminded him how actually noisy the drone is with the buzzing noise. Especially for him to get down low enough for good video.  Dh felt it would would be too distracting for the guests and they realized that was most likely right.  Not to mention, DH wasn't really that comfortable with the thought of using his drone for a wedding, haha!

Our next door neighbors are out of town for the weekend. They have a woman who comes and feeds and checks on their dogs in the early evenings. Well, Saturday evening (after she left) DH heard something outside and looked out and realized one of their dogs was outside their dog pen area. This is their biggest goofy dog. DH went out to put him back in via the gate and try to figure out how he might have gotten out. He's never gotten out before and DH never did figure it out. He said poor goof was scared and happy to go back inside. The only thing we can think happened was he got outside while lady was there to feed and she left?

DD and DF took our their new camper trailer for camping this weekend. Lots of neat pictures sent by her and their dog loved it. She has a bit of vacation time to use up before her last day, so she took half day Friday, so they could get out of town early. She's got two more weeks at her job and then will start the new one a few days after that.

Interesting. I stopped doing Swagbucks a few weeks ago. Now I am being bombarded with emails from them. LOL. I rarely got emails from them before. So, I went in and deleted my account. The only thing I was earning on was online purchases and a penny or two a day from daily poll and maybe get something for a search. The rest was too much work to earn pennies. So, now I'm just using ebates for any online purchases. The rest of my effort to earn online money is now with M-Turks. I'm still not where I'd like to be with my daily goal for M-Turks, but it's much easier to earn then Swagbucks, that's for sure. I only wish with M-Turks that hits were more available on a constant basis. I'd like to say "ok, I have an hour to work on this" and then make a few bucks. But, it seems to be I have to constantly check for hits all day long and hope to find some.

Vents, doggo's and food

Today our shop soffit vents are finally getting installed. The lone framer (because head framer is getting  married tomorrow and his brother, one of the other framers, is also off today) is doing this job today, by himself. Or rather, with DH's help, of course. Hopefully this was done soon enough and no mold has started growing up in our attic space above the ceiling! DH will have to go up and check. The rain stopped and we get a cool sunny day today. Rain is supposed to start up again this afternoon. Sigh....

Our oldest dog just turned 10. I think he's starting to get arthritis in his right shoulder or something. After sleeping or taking a nap, he's stiff and will limp a bit on his right front leg. Then once he gets moving he's fine. I have been giving him cosequin the past few years for his joints, per vet recommendation, but I'm sure at some point his age is catching up with him. Makes me sad. He's my sweet momma's boy.

The other evening our neighbor was out mowing his lawn and his dogs were out running around. Two of them apparently like to take off and one of the local service trucks driving by pulled in to tell him he saw his dogs down the road about a half mile or so. He got in his truck to go find them, but no luck. We were standing between our properties talking with him. DH offered to go look for them, but he said don't worry, they always come back. They had been seen by the service guy in the direction behind where we were facing talking to neighbor. Next thing I see, behind our neighbor, in the opposite direction of where the dogs were last seen, was the two dogs running across the fields on their way back. They didn't have a care in the world and no clue they were being looked for haha. It was the funniest thing. They just showed up like "hey guys...what's going on?!". Goofy dogs. Another reason we are getting a fence. While our dogs did not run off with them, they would probably eventually learn those bad habits and join them. They have too much fun playing with those dogs.

I was trying to make more room in my tiny fridge, so I tried powdered coffee creamer. Yuck. Had to go back to buying liquid. I've been trying to find new things I can make for dinner that doesn't require having to buy frozen or refrigerated food (no room!). It's hard. I did try some Progresso Pot Roast soup last night. DH really liked it and wanted more. I guess I'll have to make 2 cans at a time. Might try more of their soups, too. Though I'm not buying them from our town grocery store. The can was like over $3. They are $1.69 at Target. Still need more dinner ideas though. I just don't have much room to stock up on anything refrigerated. I can get a few days at a time, which stinks. I don't mind shopping once a week, but really don't like having to twice. And it's like I'm almost out of something, but I can't buy a replacement when I'm at the store because I have no room for the replacement until the first is gone. Like a carton of eggs or 1/2 gallon of milk. At least with the eggs, when I have 2-3 left I will put them in a small container to take up less room and then can add the new carton. So, like I was in town at the store 2 days ago, but couldn't get everything I would need for next few days because I don't have anywhere to put in it the fridge. So, now I'm needing to go to the store already again.
