Spring clean decision

Since we moved into our new house we've been wanting a new vacuum. I know I have blogged about vacuum's a couple of times and looked back (did you know blogger has a handy little search field up in upper left corner?) and sure enough, back in March 2013 is when I bought my current Bissell vacuum. It still works, though I am quite tired of buying bags for it! At about $6 for a 3 pack (and I can only find them online now) it's costing me over $50 a year in bags, so, so far I've spent more in bags than on the vacuum. Dumb. I hate trying to figure out which vacuum to buy.

I have several Target gift cards and several Visa gift cards I've been holding on to. $310 total. I looked online at Target. I want a Dyson and one good for pet hair.  They have two models. One is on sale for $399 (reg. $499) and the other is not on sale and it's $599. I'm trying to figure out what actually is the difference between them. One is the Dyson Cinetic Big Ball Animal and the other is the Dyson Big Ball Animal.  I can't really figure out what the difference is.

Plus, I see the $599 model cheaper elsewhere, like $440 on Amazon or $479 at Walmart and Home Depot and their websites say this model is a "closeout" - so what's the new model taking it's place then?

My Target cards only total $80, so I'm not totally tied to buying one from there (I can always use that $80 on other stuff I regularly buy at Target), unless I get the model on sale, which seems to be lowest price I could find on that model.

Then there's the Dyson Cinetic Big Ball Animal + Allergy model......and that's another $100....UGH! I hate this process of deciding. And then once I decide I have to research it to death to make sure I'm getting the best price.

  1. Are you a Costco member? There are a lot of vacuums on their warehouse site and they have free shipping. There are also member reviews that I found helpful when I was buying a smaller vac.

    1. I do have a Costco membership. I checked their dyson prices yesterday, but found lower price elsewhere.

  2. You can go on Dyson website and the have an option to talk with a Dyson expert. I would write down your question and go there to speak/type directly to someone who specializes in the Dyson product. Best wishes.

  3. I got a robotic vacuum for Xmas that's geared toward pet hair. It doesn't pick up much else that is heavier than hair but it is GREAT for pet hair! And it was less than $200 and all I have to do is turn it on and clean it out. Of course, who knows how long this love affair will last but for now, it's been great!

So is it worth $400+ to have to spend that all at once on a new machine or spend $50 a year on bags? Is the old machine still effective?
Personally over the years I have found that spending on a high end vacuum didn't mean it was better or lasted longer. My current machines are a canister upright I got at Kmart for $70 2 years ago(some name brand, don't recall offhand but most of the parts are plastic and it's decidedly LOW end)and a 10 year old Oreck mini canister(that was a freebie when you bought the deluxe Oreck upright vacuum that died quickly, cost a lot and was a POS).

  4. The vacuum was under $200 and is 4 years old now and along with that I don't like spending $50 a year now on something that old, I don't think it's cleaning as well anymore. We did really clean it out (and got a new roller brush for it) last Fall, but it's getting old. In addition I hate the hose - it's so short, it barely reaches anything. When we build our house, I'll keep and use it in the upstairs. Me and vacuums seem to have a terrible relationship. I've never been able to spend very much on them before, and they never seem to last very long (I think this is the longest one I've had) so I want to try a good quality vacuum. My mom had one of those robot ones and she really didn't care for it once the novelty wore off. I'm tired of spending $100-$200 every 2-3 years (plus the bags) plus $310 of the money towards it is gift money, so I'm really going to be out what I have spent on cheap ones in the past. The Dyson is supposed to have a 5 year warranty.

  5. I would never have a bagless vacuum again Ever. Emptying them is dreadful for people with allergies. Also, if I remember correctly, while you don't have to worry about bags, you do have to change the filters often, if the are not washable. And, God forbid you put a washable filter in even slightly damp. BLECH. After my Oreck broke, (Sluggy s right about them), I bought several $39 - $49 Bissell Powerforce machines from Walmart. They each lasted about about two years. The most recent one (my third) seems to have a very short hose for the attachment. I kepr replacing them because the plastic which keeps them upright kept breaking, making them unhandy when using the hose. I figured each time I would have it until I picked a better machine. That said, I have two dogs, four cats, a ton o' kids, and that cheapo machine works just fine. Bags are small, though. I am currently researching vacuums, and think I will go back to the Hoover Windtunnel...I had one before my Oreck. It lasted ten years, until my housekeeper broke off the wheels. Repairing it didn't make sense cost wise, so we bought the Oreck on our housekeeper's recommendation. When it worked, it was great..lightweight, powerful. But it spent A LOT of time in the shop. When the warranty expired, repairing was almost as much as a new Oreck, so we got the cheapo Bissel "to hold us over."
In any case, my friends who have had Dysons either love them or hate them. Hope you love yours.

  6. Supposedly this new "cinetic" one doesn't need the filters changed or washed. Some new technology or something. Honestly, it probably doesn't matter which vacuum I buy. I'll probably hate it! I am interested to vacuum like regular with my old vacuum and then vacuum with my new one right after and see how well the old one did!

  7. I suggest looking up the shark animal bagless reviews works great for us and cheaper then a dyson we brought it bed bath and beyond with the 20 percent off coupon

  8. My vacuum is about five years old, maybe older. I semi regularly have to almost take it apart and clean it out as hair clogs up, thanks to our pup, but then I get a few good weeks out of it. I want to say it was a Eureka wind tunnel, bagless, probably less than $150. It is sad that vacuums seem almost disposable. I'd love a Dyson if they work that great, but can't see myself spending that much so I'll keep taking apart mine and cleaning out all the hair.

  9. My two cents. When ever I am near a vacumn repair shop all I ever see are dysons more than any other brand. You might not buy bags but have more repairs?

  10. When you build your house could you put in a central vac? Ours is 24 years old and going strong.

    1. I'll have to check and see how much something like that costs to add in. Good idea.

  11. I've had a Dyson for about 10 years. Glad it was under warranty as it had a lot of problems! Another issue we had with it was that the nearest approved shop was a good distance away from where we were living at the time. Now I use it strictly for our upstairs, which has limited carpet.

  12. if you've had a vacuum last 10 years that's better than any vacuum I've had last. And since they were cheap to begin with it's not worth paying labor costs to have repaired. Where i live out in the sticks, a repair shop for any brand is going to be almost an hour away :/

    1. It has lasted longer than any other vacuum I've owned. If it were in the budget, I'd buy another one!
