Sad news

It was a very sad day yesterday. My boss called me first thing in the morning to let me know our company owner had passed away the night before. Completely unexpected. He was due to fully retire in 2 weeks, just as he would be turning 67 years old. Definitely a shock to us all, that's for sure. While the company itself will be fine, it's still quite a loss to us all.

I'll take a break today from the vacation update.

DH and I are still trying to get over Covid. I'm tired of coughing. His recovery is going slower, it seems. But, we are at least able to usually sleep through the night without coughing now and both have our appetites back.

The weather has cooled down a lot, which is nice. It's 40 degrees out this morning and the high will be low 70's. That's perfect weather to me. DH got the sprinkler system blown out for the winter, yesterday (so nothing freezes). Probably one or two more mows and he'll be done for the season. Today is his semi-annual job to flush out the 2 propane tankless water heaters we have. One of our plumbing guys , when we built the house) and told dh how to do it, with vinegar, and save the $ from paying them to come do it.

My aunt's funeral service will be broadcast live, on Saturday, so I will watch that.

I somehow remembered that it's been almost a year since I signed up for Hulu for .99 cents a month. I thought I had through November, but decided to log in and get it canceled while I was thinking about it. Good thing I did, because in a few weeks was going to be the full monthly charge at $9 a month. No thanks. I also cancelled a subscription I had (thru Amazon) for some multivitamins I've been taking. If nothing else, I'm sure I can find some that are much cheaper that work just as well (if they even do help).

I'm still waiting to get the bill for dh's MRI of his prostate. After whatever the the insurance w/o adjustment is, the rest will be to our deductible.

I have to send dh's brand new computer back due to the CPU fan running so loud and fast. Dell is sending me a packaging box to send it back in and that should arrive tomorrow. His old computer still works, so I guess I will just have to hook that one back up, until we get the new one back.

DD is looking into booking a European river cruise vacation for her and her dh next year. Sounds much smaller ships with only like 200 passengers (vs 5000) so much more intimate and less people. The prices seem to be similar to what we paid for our cruise, and she's finding flights to Europe pretty cheap. Her mother in law had to put a damper on their plans by telling them these cruises she is looking at are the "Walmart of cruises" - they, on the other hand, are spending $16,000 to do a wine type of cruise over there in Nov 2025. DD told me there's no way she and her dh are going to spend $16k, LOL.

  1. We've done all the European river cruises as well as the Mekong, and they are definitely not "Walmart"!!!! They are delightful as they dock within walking distance of the towns, had great food and guides. And yes the small amount of people is a blessing. I could never get my husband on a large cruise ship, but he loves river cruises.

    1. I'm sure dd and her dh will have a wonderful time (and save $10k haha!)

  2. DD and her hubby need the 10k for when they start to build on that land! I highly doubt any European cruise is Wal Mart styled, lol. Even an intimate cruise is high class. That is so sad about your company owner - life is so short and precious. I hope your coughing ends soon, I had a residual tickle in my throat for a bit post covid but I only coughed when I talked a lot (which is often, LOL)!

  3. Tommy and I both laughed at the Walmart comment. Any cruise in Europe is bound to be delightful. Who wants it to be a fancy boat and amenities when you have European charm all around you for so much less? I am quite sure their tour will be great. DD should think up some 'sweet' responses to her mil after they get back.

Life is definitely not predictable. Too bad he was planning on retirement and never made it that far.

Covid is why I still wear a mask and never go in to eat.

  4. If your daughter is interested in the Viking cruises there are videos on YouTube to them to watch.

    1. I think this is the line she has been looking into. I'll ask her if she's watched any videos. I know she said she joined a Facebook page to get more info

  5. European river cruises have to be smaller because - well they're on rivers. But I agree with the above commenter about Viking cruises. They look wonderful! And that's such sad news about your company owner. Two weeks from retirement!!! How awful for his family!

  6. Friends just got back from a Euro river cruise & both got terribly ill - she said it was the most expensive cabin ever! Felt so bad for them - this was the second time this has happened to them. First time they got Covic - this time, some kind of but - others had it, too.

My uncle Seamus just died the other night, too, same age as your company head (he owned a big lighting company). Sadly he didn't get to enjoy his retirement years with his wife. He's out in WA state, so not sure we'll be able to make the services, but we have fond memories of him from when he was growing up here in Ohio. You can always make more money - you can't make more time. So glad we retired younger (48 & 58) as we've had so many great experiences since!!

    1. I guess it's hard to avoid getting sick when being around lots of other people. I'm sorry to hear about your uncle. Life's just not fair sometimes.
