No cool air for us

Warm weather has arrived and DH attempted to install the 2 window air conditioners we have. We have one in our dining room and one in the large family room - we added the family room one last summer and it created a wonderful cross breeze with the other smaller unit and kept our home nice and cool last summer.  Well,  DH was channeling old buddy Murphy today and while he was trying to make the unit more stable in the window, he put the screw through the condenser of our better/newer 10,000 BTU unit. So, it's wasted, apparently.  Then he put our older unit in the dining room window and apparently it's seeing it's last days and sounds like the bearings are going it. (We've had it a long time, so not surprised). So, now we'll need to replace both - UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The 10,000 BTU Frigidaire we bought last summer is $300 and a smaller unit for the other room will run almost $200.  UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. Well, this won't repair the ac, but I use a box fan or any kind of fan to spread the cold/cool air to other rooms. To make my $300 den unit more stable, I got two cheap brackets and long screws, installing them below the ac unit and window frame. THEN, the ac did not sit on the brackets, so I added a board across the brackets and some shims for the last bit of support. The ac bracket it more expensive.

When I thought my ac was on its last legs, it lasted 10 more years. Maybe you will get lucky, too.

    1. The old one still runs, it just sounds loud and noisy. We'll keep using it until it dies :-)

  2. Are you sure they are toast??? Maybe at least one can be fixed.

  4. Well, that's just flat out unacceptable. You really should get your hands on a properly functioning AC as soon as possible. Problems like this cannot be left unabated. It would just be too cruel to have it otherwise, especially with the creeping summer heat and all.

  5. Oh no, this doesn't look good. Murphy should pay up, even for just part of the cost. It's too bad your new AC unit died this way. If there's any consolation, you could replace the old one with an even better and more efficient one, and just improvise a way to cool the rest of the house until you guys can buy a second one.

  6. Ouch, that is a bummer! It’s too bad that you had to replace both at the same time. While the second AC was already due for the replacement, it’s still frustrating that you had to replace the one that you have bought only the summer before. Anyway, I hope you were able to find good deals for the replacement ACs, and that there weren’t any problems with the installations. Good day!
