Flat on my back

Friday turned out to be a completely wasted day. Right as I was getting dressed my back "went out" on me. I'm not sure what the correct way to describe it is. More like it seized up on me. Anyway, it was like a flashback to 12-14 years ago when I dealt with that all the time after my car accident. I haven't had it do this to me in many years. It hurt so bad, it just hurt to breathe. I took some advil and got the heating pad and laid down, thinking it'll feel better in a half hour or so and I'll get back to work. No such luck.

I had messaged with my dd and she asked if I took a muscle relaxer. I said I haven't taken any of those for years and it was a prescription. Later, at almost 11pm, I remembered I still have a bottle of some old medicine in my cabinet, it's probably Flexeril.....and probably way past expiration date. I was first prescribed it right after the accident, but taking a whole pill gave me RLS while trying to sleep, so I'd have to do half. As my back improved, I didn't need that anymore. But, still had issues and PT for like 2 years. Then I started getting occipital headaches and the dr. prescribed muscle relaxers. It was the only thing that worked for me, which is why as late as 2014 I guess I still had some of that prescription. Gradually, those headaches stopped (chiropractor fixed most all my issues) and I rarely took the medication.

But, I was hurting so bad that I got up to look and it was that and expired 2014 and almost a full bottle (because I rarely needed it but when I did, I did). I figured either it will work or it won't, by this time. I had always taken half a pill (another reason why a bottle lasted so long) so I cut it in half and took one. I think it did help. I slept the rest of the night and when I got up I could at least move and breathe again. I couldn't bend over, but at least it wasn't hurting otherwise. I rested most of the morning, but did walk around a bit. At 1pm we decided to run into town and walk around the little car show going on. I figured walking was good and nothing there I needed to bend down for, LOL. Wrong! We were standing at a booth selling raffle tickets and a huge wind came up and everything everywhere started blowing and their big plastic tip jar blew down right in front of me so I instinctively bent down to grab it. We weren't there very long, maybe 40 minutes at the most and back home at 2pm.

It's still feeling about the same this morning. If I'm still not able to bend over without pain, I'll probably try another muscle relaxer before bed and see if that helps for tomorrow. I'll just stay on the heating pad most of today, again. Thankfully we got a little rain the last 2 nights, so I'm not having to water the flower pots. I have a feeling that filling up 2 big watering cans full of water and then walking around with them to water on Thursday might have been too much for my back.

DH is mostly done with his pickup upgrade project. He's just waiting on one more part and then he can put the new transmission oil and coolant or something in.

  2. I watched my mother in excruciating pain from the time I was four until she died when I was in my forties suffer with back pain when her back went out. Any little motion would send her to bed. I feel for you. Back pain is the worst! Take care.

    1. I'm glad it's been a long time since I had to deal with this. Hopefully it's not going to be recurring again

  3. Ouch! Sorry to read this.
I hope you can get relief.
Do you raise your legs with a pillow or 2 under your knees while laying flat? That can relieve some pressure on the spine.
I hope this is just a temporary thing.:*(

    1. interestingly, the first day, when it was so bad and I was laying on my back, what helped relieve some pain and let me take a deep breath was to bring my knees up to my chest and hold there for a bit.

  4. Oh poor you. I've never had back trouble (touch wood) but one of my bosses had severe problems and while he tried to hide it I could tell by his face that he was in a lot of pain. I hope you feel better soon!

    1. Lucky you! I probably never would have had back pain if a stupid car wouldn't have rear ended me years ago.
