We had recently been giving thought to adopting a couple of rescue dogs (a bonded pair), but have managed to keep ourselves talked out of it, for many reasons. Then dh was talking to Mr. Neighbor yesterday - he said their recent vet bills and surgery for one of their dogs has totaled almost $7000. Nope. No thank you! We'll just stick with our crazy little cat as our only pet.
I need to get our old phones shipped back and the shipping label from Verizon is UPS. We literally used to have our UPS guy coming here several times a week. Now we rarely even see him since Amazon doesn't use UPS, so I don't have any packages on the way, so I can just give him the package to ship back to Verizon. Plus, the last couple of deliveries we have gotten, it's a different driver, so not sure what happened there. Our old driver (who we've had for years) would text dh when he was almost here, LOL. So, I thought Walgreens was a UPS drop off, but I guess not (just FedEx), but I see that Staples is and that is on the way to Walmart tomorrow, so I can drop it off there. Plus, dh really needs a new desk/office chair, so maybe we'll take a look at what they have and he can try sitting in them and see what he likes best.
I have two work meetings this afternoon, so I only have the first half of the day to get work done. The second meeting is stupid, not even sure why it needs to be a Zoom type meeting, at all. I'm sure it could easily be taken care of with a phone call or even a couple of emails. I'll spend more time getting Zoom set up on my computer than the meeting will likely take. Annoying. I've already spent more time with my side job (the one that has basically ended) boss about it (it's with their CPA) than the meeting will probably take, LOL.
Back to sunshine today through Sunday. I'm guessing 3 days of sun and warmer temps is really going to turn the grass green and start growing again. Last evening we saw 4 deer (but only 3 in the picture) who were taking a rest on the lot next to us. This is as good as my phone could zoom in, but still much closer than my old phone could do.
I was just talking to Dh last night about vet bills. We have 2 dogs, and we spent over $10,000 on vet bills last, and will likely spend more than that this year if the younger one ends up needing acl surgery. One bill, for an abscess a couple weeks ago, was just shy of $1400-and our vet is one of the cheaper in town. We haven’t had to get into savings for the vet bills as of yet, but I anticipate doing so for the acl surgery because my large surplus in my checking is dwindling down lol. Owning a pet is definitely a luxury these days.

Our little dog we had to put to sleep because of an immune anemia attack her red blood cells. We spent probably $4,000 on vet bills trying to keep her alive. I've kept pet insurance on her and they paid 80% of the bills minus the deductible. We have been reimbursed but we would rather have our Trixie.
ReplyDeleteIt's so hard losing pets. I'm curious, do you know how much you spent over the years for her to have pet insurance?
DeleteI would hate to have pets in a place with apex predators about.
ReplyDeletedogs are fine around here. Most have them and the breeds that ranches and farms have help protect the livestock from predators. The predator animals really don't want to be where the humans are and having a barking dog that gets alerted if it senses something "out there" also acts as deterrent for them to come to houses.
DeleteWhen I first retired I really, really wanted a dog, using the excuse that it would force me to get out there and walk. And then I started travelling and realized having a pet would be a tremendously expensive constraint. Plus with my very much reduced pension, who wants huge vet bills? Oh I know I would love that dog but now I'm over it. My friend is picking up a new labrador puppy on 18 April and I do wonder a little. She's 68 and not in good health so how much will she walk that dog? Oh she takes wonderful care of them (she's had four labs before) but they spent all their time in their enclosed garden. I just don't get it. Plus, at our ages you really want to outlive your dogs, not the other way around! So nope, not for me sadly!
ReplyDeleteWe've had the same thoughts on all the reasons not get gone one (or two! LOL). The cost, not just vet bills (especially as they age) but food and treats for 2 big dogs is a lot. The amount of fur shedding in the house, dh having to pickup dog poop daily again, etc. I don't want to have to set aside $10k or more (per dog) to anticipate a huge vet bill. When our last dog got sick (cancer/tumor in nasal) we spent thousands just finding out what was wrong with him. With his type there wasn't anything more to do, but if it had been something we could operate on, we would have had to spend thousands more. I just really don't want that expense down the road, during retirement.
